Injured in a motor vehicle accident in Scarborough or MVA?

Under Minor Injury Guideline

A minor injury is defined both in the Statutory Accident Benefits Schedule (SABS) and the MIG as a sprain, strain, whiplash-associated disorder, contusion, abrasion, laceration, or subluxation and any clinically associated sequelae.

Note: 

  • Inform the police of the accident. Ontario only requires you to call the police if somebody is injured or you suspect the other vehicle is under the influence of drugs or alcohol, or if the cost of the damage for all vehicles amounting to more than $2,000 otherwise you have 24 hours to report the collision to a Collision Reporting Centre. 
  •  Inform your family doctor.
  • Consult a personal injury lawyer (if required)
  • Inform your insurance company and open a claim for your accident as soon as possible.
  •  Start the process of rehabilitation to get better.

How much treatment I am covered?

  • Minor injury (MIG) to catastrophic injury: medical benefits may apply. 
  • Under the MIG, $3,500 worth of treatments including assessments, will be covered by auto insurance.  (Combined medical benefits of OCF23 and OCF18). All clients who have been into a car accident if you coordinated with your car insurance are eligible. You are not required to spend the entire $3,500, if you only want consultation or checkup, or few treatments just for you to get better. 
  • For non-catastrophic injuries but is out of MIG the injured person may receive up to $65,000 for any one accident, in combined medical, rehabilitation and attendant care benefits.
  •  Catastrophic impairment resulting from an accident, the maximum benefit is $1,000,000 combined for medical, rehabilitation and attendant care.
